Travel + Sketching = Inspiration When we travel, we don't want to follow the same itinerary as everyone who's come before us. We want to feel like explorers, adventurers in undiscovered territory. And that's exactly what sketching can bring to the travel experience. An Illustrated Journey captures the world through the eyes of 40 talented artists, illustrators and designers. You'll experience the wonder of seeing familiar sights through a fresh lens but, more important, you'll be inspired to set pen to paper and capture your own vistas. The really wonderful thing about a sketchbook is that it can be totally private. You don't have to have an ounce of talent to enjoy learning how to really see what's in front of you. But lucky for us, the sketchbooks captured here are lovely, creative, intimate windows into each artist's mind. So, whether you're just returning to the art of drawing, abandoned by most of us after childhood, or you're looking for inspiration to take your illustration work in a new direction, An Illustrated Journey will take you on a wonderful trip of the imagination. All you need to pack are a pencil and a piece of paper.

The Tao Te Ching is fundamental to the Taoist school of Chinese philosophy and strongly influenced other schools, such as Legalism and Neo-Confucianism. This ancient book is also central in Chinese religion, not only for Taoism but Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Taoist words and concepts. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners have used the Tao Te Ching as a source of inspiration. Its influence has also spread widely outside East Asia, aided by hundreds of translations into Western languages.

"I have been writing and illustrating this book on the subject of grief and survival almost daily throughout this full year. With love and understanding of our Journey, my hope is that this book brings comfort to all who read it." So begins Claudia Chappel's second collection of paintings and meditations on the process of grieving the loss of a loved one. This book is full of beautiful, full-color paintings that capture the spaces and feelings that one passes through while shoring up under intense pain, and surviving. At the age of 53, Claudia Chappel experienced the unimaginable. She answered a knock at the door and a policeman was standing there. He told her every parent's worst nightmare: her son Ben, the first love of her life, was gone. She fell into a dark and lonely place. She gave up painting. Over the next 13 years, Claudia slowly learned to live with her pain and grief. She began to paint again. Her work had no special meaning to her at the time. Anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one began to seek her out for advice, comfort and hope. Over time Claudia realized that she was saying the same words repeatedly, so she decided to write them down. It wasn't until she began writing her first book that she realized the art, which she thought had no meaning, served as perfect illustrations. Claudia's first book, The Art of Living with Grief, was initially written as a gift for a mother whose son had recently died. Other's wanted copies to send to friends who were suffering the same losses, so she started making copies. The growing response indicated a need to publish the book more traditionally, and soon people who were grieving the deaths of spouses and parents and other loved ones were sharing that first book. This demand inspired this new volume, which is meant to help a broader audience process their grief. Helping others gives purpose to both Claudia's grief and her art.

After spending much of her life as a psychologist, Dr. Mary Baures adopted baby elephants and took up wildlife photography. Sitting around nighttime campfires in Zambia, Botswana, and Kenya she felt intimately connected to the eerie whoop of hyenas mixed with the deep reverberating moans of lions calling to each other. She realized these tiny magical moments--and the clean leap of a leopard from a tree, the graceful dance of impalas, the slashing horns of a buffalo--went unnoticed while she sat in boxy rooms with ideas, disconnected from the energy flowing through living things. In the rainforests of Borneo and Brazil, in the Japanese Alps, in the wilds of Alaska, out of the clutter and grasping of our culture, under the sliver of the moon, Mary Baures connected to something elemental. Wild lives guided her across the threshold of human limitation to the force that blossoms flowers-from which we came and to which we return. Join her in her journey to reverence.
