As an Earl Desires

As an Earl Desires

“It comes back to your desire for honesty and your discontentment with seeing only the surface of a person. You want more than I am able to give.” “I could settle for less,” he said, surprised by the almost desperate plea in his voice.

USA Today bestselling and Rita Award-winning author Lorraine Heath has created a lush, emotional love story. Camilla Hutchenson, countess, sponsor, darling of the ton, has reached a staggering level of social power. But one man has managed to distract her attention from her schedule of charity endeavours and teas—and not just because he holds the deed to her estate. The man in question, Archibald Warner, is the new Earl of Sachse. Though at first meeting he suspects his new ward of being nothing more than a social bit of fluff, the more time passes, the more he finds himself drawn to her. But there is something she is hiding from him, and she hesitates to show him her real heart, even though she wishes she could learn to trust him with it. For somehow she knows . . . if only she can give him the chance, he will teach her everything she could hope to learn about love.

1347. Calais has finally fallen and Alaun de Montisfryth, first Earl of Montisfryn, powerful Marcher lord and companion of Edward III, is dispatched back to England with orders to secure the Welsh border. Halfway home, pride tempts Montisfryn to attend a tournament held by his family's old foes at Versallet Castle. Eloise de Versallet, the widowed Lady de Cannar, rules her father's castle with a tongue sharper than any sword. She has no great opinion of men in general and of knights in particular. Montisfryn and Eloise meet and sparks fly. He is intrigued. She is irritated. He is under royal edict to wed. An experienced lady, well-born, still young, and exceedingly well-endowed with both wealth and beauty, Eloise is a matrimonial prize beyond compare-and has vowed to remain unwed. Potent and powerful, will Montisfryn be able to breach her walls, storm her castle, and succeed where all others have failed? Or will Eloise, haughty and defiant to the last, prevail? The gauntlet is flung, the challenge accepted. And desire enters the fray.

Foreign Exchange is the story of two women and their experiences at an American Episcopalian missionary school in Wuhan from 1929-1937. Yeh Yuanshuang was a student from a privileged Chinese family; Dorothea Kingsley Wakeman was a short-term teacher from a privileged American family. Both would be transformed by their experiences at St. Hilda's School for Girls, whose walls served to protect the school from outside danger as well as to help create a space where new gender expectations could be nurtured, hidden away from the gaze of prying eyes. Examining St. Hilda's through the experiences of these two women illuminates the liberating qualities of female education, the power of personal narrative as an ethnographic/historical research tool, and how the stories of Yuanshuang and Dorothea are embedded in the historical circumstances of their times. The telling of their stories also reveals the impact of the modern world on their parents' generation.
