Excerpt from At the New Theatre and Others, the American Stage: Its Problems and Performances, 1908-1910 During the seasons of 1908 - 09 and 1909 - 10 the most interesting developments in the American dramatic world have been the steady rise to strength of an opposition to the so-called Theatrical Syndicate and the opening of the New Theatre in New York. The New Theatre is still, after one season, an experiment. It is not truly an endowed Institution, but a private playhouse depending for its support on the continued good will of its wealthy founders. It was not democratic in its inception nor planned by men shrewdly versed in the difficult craft of the theatre. It has labored under a great handicap. Its future usefulness, if not its very existence, will depend upon how well those at its head learn the lesson of experience. But its field of possible achievement is mighty; it repre sents a significant effort to place the drama in this country upon a level with the other arts, above the truck of commerce. The rise of an opposition to the Theatrical Syndicate has been, in a different way, no less signifi cant and, so far, very much more successful. The history of Shakespearean performance is very well served at its two extremes, with volumes providing a valuable historical overview of the subject and others concentrating on the performance history of a particular play. However, no individual volume provides an in-depth consideration of the stage histories of a number of plays, chosen for their particular significance within specific cultural contexts. Shakespeare in Stages addresses this gap. The original case studies explore significant anglophone performances of the plays, as well as ideas about 'Shakespeare', through the changing prisms of three different cultural factors that have proved influential in the way Shakespeare is staged: notions of authenticity, attitudes towards sex and gender, and questions of identity. Ranging from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries and examining productions of plays in Britain, USA, Canada, Australia, and South Africa, the studies focus attention on the complex interaction between particular plays, issues, events, and periods.

Although Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are culturally distinct, they share a common theatre history characterized by resistance, first as a response to Nazi occupation, then as an ideological weapon countering their annexation under strict Soviet ideology. This comprehensive overview of contemporary theatre in the Baltic states includes interviews with major directors, writers, academics and critics, critiques of significant performances, and historical information to familiarize readers with the region. It not only discusses the political ramifications of the three countries’ transition from occupied Soviet states to independent members of the European Union, but also addresses the aesthetic, cultural and national issues associated with the move to independence and the adaptation of a Western economic model. More than an introduction, this book is a forum for ideas as well as a detailed, first-hand account of the current scene in Baltic theatre. While useful for anyone interested in contemporary theatre, it is also essential reading for those interested in Baltic studies, post–Soviet cultural history, and recent trends in East European literature.
