Throughout the years, scores of players have polished their skills in Broome County with the Crickets, the Bingos, the Triplets, and today's Binghamton Mets. Professional baseball began in the area in 1871, and the highlights came quickly. The early stars included an eighteen-year-old future Hall of Famer, Montgomery Ward; the first known black player in professional baseball, Bud Fowler; and Hall of Famer "Wee Willie" Keeler. By 1923, the Triplets were playing in Johnson City. They soon became affiliated with the Yankees and sent that franchise some of their best players, including Whitey Ford, Vic Raschi, and Thurman Munson. From 1969 to 1991, professional baseball disappeared from Broome County, but it was back with a bang in 1992, featuring a new stadium and a firm relationship with the New York Mets. Baseball in Broome County recounts this great story with more than one hundred eighty photographs and engaging text.

The Broome Dusters played their first home game at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on October 18, 1973. The game was symbolic of what was to come. Down 6-0, they fought back only to lose 8-7. Their fan support followed a similar pattern, lukewarm at first and then ferociously loyal. Hockey became a passion for local fans and has continued to be so to this day. When the Dusters disbanded, they were followed by the Whalers, Rangers, B.C. Iceman, and the Senators. Hockey in Broome County tells this fascinating story with more than 200 photographs and engaging text. Relive the heroics of the Dusters' Rod Bloomfield, "the little guy that everyone picked on." Then skip ahead to the crowd-pleasing toughness of the Whalers' Randy MacGregor and the more recent brilliance of the Senators' Jason Spezza.

This is the biography of Bud Fowler (ne John Jackson), the first African American to play in organized baseball, and the longest tenured at the time that the color line was drawn. In addition to his professional playing career, which lasted more than 25 years, Fowler was a scout, organizer, owner, and promoter of touring black baseball clubs--including the legendary Page Fence Giants--in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Emphasizing the social and cultural contexts for Fowler's accomplishments on and off the baseball diamond, and his prominence within the history and development of the national pastime, the text builds a convincing case for Fowler as one of the great pioneering figures of the early game.

With compelling photographs dating from 1889 to the present, Johnson City Firefighting portrays not only the spectacular fires that this south-central New York State city has experienced over the years but also the founding, growth, and personnel of the Johnson City Fire Department. This fire history is notable because of the man for whom the community is named: shoe manufacturer George F. Johnson. To keep his factories safe, Johnson paid for fire stations, equipment, advanced alarm systems, and even early sprinkler systems.
