Coaching is like baking a cake. You usually need a recipe.BUT you still have to supply the ingredients.THEN mix them together in the right order.AND do the actual cooking. The ingredients you need to supply are:Your time. Some money. How your cake will turn out depends on your supply of the ingredients. It also depends on how you do the cooking. This is the sequence in which you actually do things. How your cake turns out depends on the manner of your cooking. It will also depend on your stove.Your energy, determination, persistence and single minded focus. It also depends on the correct temperature of your stove. You should end up with a solution to your coaching problem. It is unlikely to be identical to any other. The differences will be own input. That's how it should be.BUT if you do not have the required ingredientsAnd a suitable stoveYou should not attempt to cook.Wayne Gretsky - a creative hockey player.Recently I saw an interview on Australian TV with Wayne Gretsky. The Winter Olympics were on in Canada at the time. I had heard of him before. He seemed a pleasant person who was enthusiastic about ice hockey. He wasn't as big as I thought he might have been. I imagined ice hockey players as being something like grid-iron players.Except not often of African origin. Gretsky didn't fit the image at all.Canadian friends told me he was one of the smallest players. But he was a master despite his size.He holds more records than any other player in ice hockey history. He was also amazing to watch. He survived by quickness and intelligence. He also had supernatural peripheral vision. In addition he understood the dynamics of the game so well.He generally knew where the puck and the other players were going. Before they went. So he often seemed to be skating around pylons. As the mesmerised opposition remained stationary. He controlled the play so well. That the area behind the opposition's net was called 'Gretsky's office'. He used to get the puck behind the net and essentially stop the play. Then pass to the player who was open and in it went. He was so quick. The opposition didn't want to chase him behind their own net.For fear of getting 'burned' which often happened anyway. There's brutality in ice hockey so most players are big and strong. The finesse is there but overshadowed by the hitting (body checking). There is much less now than there used to be.But the injuries are getting more severe. That's because those big players are moving faster and thus hit harder! Gretsky had a couple of enforcers though. They made mincemeat out of anyone who went near him.Europeans play with more attention to finesse on a larger rink. But that was the beauty of Gretsky. He was too small to hit or be hit in most cases So he concentrated on the other skills.Wayne Gretsky turned his weakness (size) into a major advantage. You can do that too if you focus on what you can do.Rather than on what you can't. Work on your strengths. You'll not just get up when knocked down. You'll also improve what you do and get knocked down less often. Maybe like Gretsky you'll get so good you aren't knocked down at all!The start stops most people.Back in my art student days I learnt how to deal with this problem.I was in the third year of a four-year art course. One memorable evening I arrived for class and was the only one there!I wasn't happy but decided not to waste my time.I looked at my blank canvas and didn't know what to do.Yes the start certainly had me stopped.Have you had this feeling?I still didn't know what to do.I mixed Indian red with turps.Because the paint was runny, I flicked some onto the canvas.I splashed on more.Still further splashes followed the first ones.It was a bit like an Indian red "Jackson Pollock‟.I decided to join up the dots.I was pleased with the result which I had not anticipated before

Times have changed in the coaching profession. In today’s world of sport, players must deal with complex issues. Athletes are now more apt to fight for what they deserve than they were in the Vince Lombardi or John Wooden eras. That makes your role as the coach tougher than ever. Not only must you teach athletes the skills, strategies, and discipline to help them succeed; you also are expected to guide, encourage, respect, and inspire athletes. Creative Coaching is a strategic handbook for addressing the challenges of coaching modern athletes and maximizing their sport performance. Written by one of this country’s top coaching consultants, the book presents innovative approaches with proven payoffs. What sets author Jerry Lynch’s coaching method apart is his unique, collective approach. You will learn to teach, guide, and motivate in a reciprocal relationship with athletes. Respect and authority are earned not through a title or through disciplinary measures but through a clear vision and effective communication that prompts athletes to exert maximum effort toward their goals and develop their own decision-making skills—all of which have a direct performance payoff. Creative Coaching explores three facets of successful coaching. Part I, Developing Qualities for Successful Leadership, provides assessment tools to help you identify your leadership style and better understand the athletes you work with. Part II, Leading With a Purpose, will help you position yourself to be a more effective leader and create a positive training environment based on what you know about your athletes and your own leadership style. Finally, Part III, Unleashing Prepared Athletes, shows you how to bring it all together to help athletes reach their potential during competition. Throughout the book, you’ll be challenged with real scenarios in which you must try to solve problems, and new strategies that have proven to be effective with today’s athletes. The approach presented in this book gets results. Those who have immersed themselves and their teams in this approach have produced very successful records. During the past 10 years, author Jerry Lynch has worked closely with 21 teams who reached the Final Four—12 of those teams won the national championship—and with individual clients who have won a collective total of 15 national championships. Creative Coaching is more than a “how to win” manual. The inventive techniques apply to a wide variety of coaching situations and will help you and your athletes experience all the fun and passion of sport—at the same time, you’ll perform your best.

Pat Burns was one of the great NHL coaches. He worked with the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils, and seemed always to enjoy instant success. He capped his extraordinary career by coaching the New Jersey Devils to a Stanley Cup victory in 2003. Cancer--his third bout--finally claimed him in 2010, aged 58. Rosie DiManno, who knew Burns well, has written a revealing, exhilarating and heartfelt account of his life: his childhood as a fatherless, solitary male surrounded by many women, his years as a police officer, his glorious coaching career and his long and characteristically valiant ending. Coach is both the first major biography of Burns and one that, with its revelations, personal insights and riveting prose, is--like the man himself--sure to be both controversial and hard to beat. Rosie DiManno knew, liked and admired Burns, and in the writing of this book has interviewed many, many people from every stage of his life. She is not blind to his less endearing qualities, but seeks to explain them. DiManno reveals a man of contradictions--gruff and crude, bullying and sentimental, and easily wounded. She shows, moreover, a man of hockey. The Burns who rode motorcycles, dressed like a cowboy, and sweet-talked the ladies was, says DiManno, a self-creation. His one indisputable, true talent was for coaching hockey. He was a pure coach. DiManno tells a compelling story and helps us to understand a complex man, one who gave little of himself to the public and yet whose funeral was a spectacle. How did that happen? Who was Pat Burns? Rosie DiManno, who witnessed much of the story, has the answers.

Atheism, this book argues, is unbelievable. The universe’s wonders couldn’t have come about by chance. Natural selection alone doesn’t produce evolution. Therefore since evolution resembles the creative process, especially in using trial-and-error, God’s creative activity is responsible and human creators reveal much about him. However that process is goal directed, so evolution must be as well. But the goal a Picasso or Darwin pursues is vague. They don’t know exactly where they’re going and make mistakes and so therefore must God. Thus Abra rejects the perfect God assumed by many religions and Intelligent Design. Why bring back God? To restore meaning and purpose to existence and faith’s many benefits. To better explain how the universe, scientific laws and life itself came about, and living things’ attractive but useless properties. Other discussions clarify both creativity and the creative God. Is there one kind of creativity or many? A sex difference? Are creators neurotic?
