Most introductions to postmodernism are either wholly negative or wholly positive. Stewart Kelly and James Dew present a balanced introduction and assessment of postmodernism that corrects misunderstandings and examines its shortcomings. The aim of this book is to tell a fuller story of postmodernism as applied to philosophy and a few other related disciplines. The book considers postmodernism from different angles. Apart from examining the nexus between postmodernism and different branches of philosophy. The ideas of leading postmodern thinkers we critically discussed. In an age where students find it very difficult to buy relevant books, this book is a handy reference material because it covers the very essential areas of postmodernism. I must commend the Editors of the book for their editorial astuteness and all the contributors for exhibiting a wonderful and overwhelming enlightenment for philosophy students and students of related disciplines. I strongly recommend the book for these and enlightened readers who seek a deeper knowledge of the subject.

The great diversity of contexts in which the term Postmodernism is currently encountered reflects the remarkable success of a coinage that has been in circulation for only about forty years. It has been used by philosophers, sociologists, art critics and literary historians to become, finally, a household word in the language of advertising and politics. Before letting it fade to a derelict cliché, an attempt is made in this volume of essays to use its potential as a cultural concept for the analysis and understanding of contemporary literature and thought.

Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Tourism, grade: 70% (First), University of Lincoln, language: English, abstract: ‘The real world of postmodern culture ... has entertainment as its ideology, the spectacle as the emblematic sign of the commodity form [and] lifestyle advertising as its popular psychology’ (Kroker and Cook cited by Liu, 1998). This quote should demonstrate which changes postmodernism evokes. One of these changes is the emergence of lifestyle advertising explained here as a popular psychology which stands for its marketing character as being a persuasive and convincing form of advertising. Its aims are to fill the consumers with emotions of a specific lifestyle they should strive for to live. Therefore, lifestyle advertising can be seen as an important appearance out of the postmodern age, which will be defined and explained in this paper. Moreover, adverts will be presented in order to show how semiotic analysis can reveal the workings of lifestyle advertisements. With the aim of illustrating how this will work, three lifestyle adverts from the destination Australia were selected and analyzed by using semiotic terms and explanations. Nevertheless, the paper is also focusing on demonstrating how the emergence of lifestyle advertising is a reflection of cultural changes in the postmodern age. Those cultural changes will be illustrated and a connection between postmodernism and tourism will be drawn. However, this paper starts with explaining postmodernism from different points of views of scholars and authors, such as Featherstone, Lyotard or Singh, who defined and explained the term postmodernism in their way of experience and understanding.

“If I could, I would put this book into the hands of every Christian in America.” —Dr. David Jeremiah “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). Each day, you watch America turn further from Christian values and the core principles of liberty. It’s frustrating to feel you can’t assert biblical truth without facing condemnation, and fearful to witness outrage and victimhood replace respect and reason. Amidst this dissent, how can you not only stay rooted in your own faith, but continue publicly testifying for Jesus? In We Will Not Be Silenced, Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer prepares you to live out your convictions against a growing tide of hostility. Gain a better understanding of nonbelievers’ legitimate hurts and concerns regarding issues like racism, sexism, and poverty—and identify the toxic responses secular culture disguises as solutions. In the process, you’ll see how you can show compassion and gentleness to those outside of the faith without affirming their beliefs. We Will Not Be Silenced will ready you to move beyond fear and boldly accept the challenge of representing Christ to a watching world that needs Him now more than ever before.

John McGowan brings a fresh perspective to ongoing debates about the political implications of postmodernist thought and the relationship of intellectuals to contemporary culture. In addition to providing a comprehensive overview of the philosophical context of postmodernism, he considers the kinds of freedom and oppositional politics that are possible under postmodern conditions.
