The mid-infrared domain is a promising optical domain because it holds two transparency atmospheric windows, as well as the fingerprint of many chemical compounds. Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are one of the available sources in this domain and have already been proven useful for spectroscopic applications and free-space communications. This thesis demonstrates how to implement a private free-space communication relying on mid-infrared optical chaos and this requires an accurate cartography of non-linear phenomena in quantum cascade lasers. This private transmission is made possible by the chaos synchronization of two twin QCLs. Chaos in QCLs can be generated under optical injection or external optical feedback. Depending on the parameters of the optical feedback, QCLs can exhibit several non-linear phenomena in addition to chaos. Similarities exist between QCLs and laser diodes when the chaotic dropouts are synchronized with an external modulation, and this effect is known as the entrainment phenomenon. With a cross-polarization reinjection technique, QCLs can generate all-optical square-waves. Eventually, it is possible to trigger optical extreme events in QCLs with tilted optical feedback. All these experimental results allow a better understanding of the non-linear dynamics of QCLs and will extend the potential applications of this kind of semiconductor lasers.

This book introduces some alternative methods for enhancing the performance of In(Ga)As/GaAs-based quantum dot infrared photodetectors (QDIPs). In(Ga)As/GaAs-based QDIPs and focal plane array (FPA) cameras have wide application in fields such as military and space science. The core of the study uses a combination of quaternary In0.21Al0.21Ga0.58As and GaAs spacer as a capping layer on In(Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots in the active region of the detector structure. For the purposes of optimization, three types of samples growths are considered with different capping thicknesses. The results presented include TEM, XRD and photoluminescence studies that compare combination barrier thickness and its effect on structural and optical properties. Compressive strain within the heterostructure, thermal stability in high temperature annealing, spectral response, shifts in PL peaks peak,and responsivity and detectivity are all considered. The results also present a narrow spectral width that was obtained by using InAs QDs which is very useful for third generation FPA camera application. The book details effect of post-growth rapid thermal annealing on device characteristics and methods to enhance responsivity and peak detectivity. The contents of this book will be useful to researchers and professionals alike.

The second volume of the book concerns the characterization approach of photonic crystals, photonic crystal lasers, photonic crystal waveguides and plasmonics including the introduction of innovative systems and materials. Photonic crystal materials promises to enable all-optical computer circuits and could also be used to make ultra low-power light sources. Researchers have studied lasers from microscopic cavities in photonic crystals that act as reflectors to intensify the collisions between photons and atoms that lead to lazing, but these lasers have been optically-pumped, meaning they are driven by other lasers. Moreover, the physical principles behind the phenomenon of slow light in photonic crystal waveguides, as well as their practical limitations, are discussed. This includes the nature of slow light propagation, its bandwidth limitation, coupling of modes and particular kind terminating photonic crystals with metal surfaces allowing to propagate in surface plasmon-polariton waves. The goal of the second volume is to provide an overview about the listed issues.
