Provides more than three hundred heart-smart recipes that range from favorite American classics to vegetarian and ethnic dishes, and incorporates the latest information on heart disease and diet. More than ten years ago, a team of heart specialists and dietitians at Baylor College of Medicine and The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, created the Living Heart Diet for their patients. Their best-selling book explained the relationship between nutrition and heart disease and helped change America's eating habits. Updated and completely revised, The New Living Heart Diet incorporates the latest information on how to minimize your risk factors for coronary heart disease and reflects changes in our tastes and eating habits. Drawing on recent research in health and nutrition, the New Living Heart Diet helps you make food and lifestyle choices to control blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, blood pressure, weight, and diabetes. It clarifies information about vitamins and minerals, interprets the new nutrition labels, and explains how to select among the array of foods in supermarkets. Also included is a special chapter on vegetarian eating. More than 300 new or revised recipes—along with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and holiday menus—are provided to make healthy cooking and eating convenient. The recipes and menus have easy-to-understand nutrient analyses and feature traditional American as well as international dishes. From the detailed guides for selecting food when eating out to the comprehensive tables describing the nutrient content of common foods, the New Living Heart Diet makes it easy for readers to enjoy delicious, healthy eating every day. “...includes the latest information on how to minimize risk factors for coronary heart diseases, clarifies infor- mation about vitamins and minerals, interprets the new nutrition labels, & explains how to select proper food.”

The Gravity of Weight: A Clinical Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance, by Sylvia R. Karasu, M.D., and T. Byram Karasu, M.D., is a scholarly and critical inquiry into the field of overweight and obesity. Reviewing more than 900 publications, from some of the early classical papers to the most recent research, the authors have integrated the complex psychological and physiological aspects of the mind, brain, and body to explain why the control of body weight is so daunting for so many people. Written primarily for clinicians in all health-related fields, including physicians, psychologists, nurses, social workers, and nutritionists, as well as for their intellectually curious patients, The Gravity of Weight explores the controversy regarding obesity as a disease with morbidity and mortality, as well as the complex methodological issues involved in obesity research. The authors delineate the extraordinary metabolic complexities implicated in weight control as well as the importance of circadian rhythms and sleep as they relate to weight and even disorders such as the night eating syndrome. They also investigate the psychological aspects of overweight and obesity, including discrimination against the obese and the fat acceptance movement, and they discuss some of the most common diets as well as the psychotherapeutic, pharmacological, and surgical treatment options currently available for these patients. The Gravity of Weight: A Clinical Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary text that synthesizes some of the most essential information for successful weight control: The role of the environment, including diet, disordered eating, and portion control, in weight management The National Weight Control Registry and the study of those successful at weight control The importance of differentiating weight loss from weight loss maintenance The qualitative and quantitative measurements of physical activity, including the role of exercise for maintenance of weight loss The contribution of genetics to "the obesities" Depression and obesity: cause or consequence? Psychotherapeutic strategies, including cognitive behavioral therapy Medical and surgical treatment approaches and their effectiveness Drs. Karasu have drawn from both professional and personal experience to write The Gravity of Weight: A Clinical Guide To Weight Loss and Maintenance. Both had fathers who suffered from morbid obesity. One died at the age of 56, while the other lived to be 91. The authors' professional curiosity led them to question how differences in environment, genetics, and overall physical and psychological health can affect one person's longevity and another's early passing. In searching for the answers to some of the most perplexing questions regarding weight, the authors have created what is perhaps the most comprehensive exploration of the relationship of the mind, brain, body and our environment to overweight and obesity. The resulting text deserves a prominent place in the library of those who work in this field.

"Lake Charles: 1908-1926 Along the cool sequester'd vale of life, They kept the noiseless tenor of their way. September 23, 1996 KLM Flight 287 rolled to a seamless stop on the tarmac, and settled on its wheels under the translucent Moscow sky. A contingent of American heart surgeons and support staff blinked and stretched. Their leader was famous for dozing off as soon as the wheels were up on any flight of length, and more than one of his retinue had mimicked that feat on this last leg of their journey from Houston via Amsterdam. This was not the first sojourn to Russia for their Chief - that had been back in 1958, when the country had another name and quite another polity. Many other visits had followed, accompanied by accolades and fetes, mostly with a Cold War political undertone he neither shared nor acknowledged. By nature he was fond of reflecting on change and history, and he did not miss the significance of returning to this place, the both of them now so different, in a position to alter the life path of a man who, himself, was responsible for much of this country's metamorphosis. The President of Russia, Boris Yeltsin, was suffering from congestive heart failure and severe coronary artery disease. The situation was grave; he was not expected to live without open-heart surgery - coronary bypass - but it was not clear that he could survive the procedure itself. The leading Russian heart surgeons and cardiologists had asked this Houston team to come to Moscow to assess the risks and provide recommendations as to how to proceed. In the geopolitically-charged climate of the immediate post-Cold War period, bringing in a coterie of Americans as consultants on the medical care of the most powerful man in Russia provoked all manner of responses on both sides of the Atlantic. The world's major news organizations focused on the story, covering every aspect. This fuss was of little consequence to the team from Texas, however. They were there to do a job, and their very presence in the Russian capital was as much of a validation as any that they were the most qualified group in the world for the task"--
