Subversions of the American Century: Filipino Literature in Spanish and the Transpacific Transformation of the United States argues that the moment the United States became an overseas colonial power in 1898, American national identity was redefined across a global matrix. The Philippines, which the United States seized at that point from Spain and local revolutionaries, is therefore the birthplace of a new kind of America, one with a planetary reach that was, most profoundly, accompanied by resistance to that reach by local peoples. Post-1898 Filipino literature in Spanish testifies crucially to this foregrounding fact of American global power, for it is the language of that tradition that speaks directly to the reality of one empire having wrested land from another. Yet this literature is invisible in American Studies programs, Asian Studies programs, Spanish and English departments, and everywhere else. Subversions of the American Century will change that. After Subversions, students and scholars in various American Studies disciplines as well as Asian, Spanish, and Comparative Literature fields will find it necessary to revisit and revamp the basic parameters by which they approach their subjects.

Due to its ability to freeze a moment in time, the photo is a uniquely powerful device for ordering and understanding the world. But when an image depicts complex, ambiguous, or controversial events--terrorist attacks, wars, political assassinations--its ability to influence perception can prove deeply unsettling. Are we really seeing the world "as it is" or is the image a fabrication or projection? How do a photo's content and form shape a viewer's impressions? What do such images contribute to historical memory? About to Die focuses on one emotionally charged category of news photograph--depictions of individuals who are facing imminent death--as a prism for addressing such vital questions. Tracking events as wide-ranging as the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, the Holocaust, the Vietnam War, and 9/11, Barbie Zelizer demonstrates that modes of journalistic depiction and the power of the image are immense cultural forces that are still far from understood. Through a survey of a century of photojournalism, including close analysis of over sixty photos, About to Die provides a framework and vocabulary for understanding the news imagery that so profoundly shapes our view of the world.

Even on a bumper sticker, grace is irresistible. Grace Sticks: The Bumper Sticker Gospel for Restless Souls is light-hearted spiritual memoir and theological travel guidance for restless souls looking for more direction, more truth, and more life. Robb-Dover invites readers to reflect on how the bumper stickers they affix to their cars or entertain at traffic lights are themselves spiritual aspirations of sorts pointing to One who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. In their meanderings, with bumper stickers as pit stops, readers will laugh, cry, be provoked, and be inspired to look for God in the most seemingly frivolous and unlikely of places. They'll discover in the process there's as much grace to be found in the journeying itself as in the destination.

Memories of catastrophes--both those which occur naturally and those which are consequences of human actions--loom large in the modern consciousness. The volume opens with an investigation of the concepts of catastrophe and collective memory, and the relationships between them. Arguing that a pervasive catastrophic memory may be as disabling as it is instructive, Gray and Oliver stress the necessity of rendering the phenomenon subject to secular critical inquiry. The value of such an approach is then demonstrated in a series of case studies.

Finding the right agent can be a bewildering, frustrating and byzantine process for beginners and experienced writers alike. How do you tell a good agent from a bad agent? What's the best way to approach an agent? What exactly does an agent do? In The Agents Directory, editor-turned-agent Rachel Vater answers these questions and more. Unlike guides that have readers sifting through page after page of listings of agencies that aren't accepting new writers, won't read manuscripts, or will charge money up-front, The Agents Directory offers an exclusive guide to the best literary and script agents looking for new clients. Each listing provides detailed, up-to-date information about the type of work each agent accepts, clients he or she represents, recent sales, contact information, and the best way to submit work. Detailed instructions for writing a query letter, complete with sample queries, help readers make a great impression on an agent. A bonus directory to writing conferences across the US and Canada provides networking opportunities with other writers, agents, and editors. The Agents Directory also includes an extensive list of writer's organizations -- invaluable resources to support a commitment to writing.

In a night of unforgettable tragedy, the world's most famous liner struck an iceberg on 14 April 1912 and sank. Over 1500 people died. Whose fault it was, and how the passengers and crew reacted, has been the subject of continuing dispute over the 100 years since the disaster. This is an account of Titanic's tragic maiden voyage which also focuses on some of those who died: among them Titanic's captain Edward Smith and builder Thomas Andrews, John Jacob Astor, the richest man on board, and the bandmaster, Wallace Hartley, who played as the ship sank. In this centenary edition Stephanie Barczewski traces the events of that fatal night. Many of those who died were treated as heroes and how these men were remembered says much about contemporary values of manhood, chivalry and national pride. Titanic: A Night Remembered also sets the liner in the context of three ports: Belfast, where she was built; Southampton, which lost 600 citizens as members of her crew; and Queenstown in Ireland, her last port of call.
Scott describes Plebes as silly, stupid, and in-your-face-just like the college boys it lampoons. This first-ever compendium of the most popular strip from The Onion is a hilarious assault on the moronic, vulgar behavior often exhibited by beer-swilling, girl-ogling college males. The strip's mocking self-help themes offer "guidance" on topics ranging from "Turning Your Dormitory Into a Lucrative Real Estate Investment" to "Turn Your Beer-Commercial Fantasy Into Reality." Students and grads everywhere will enjoy the irreverent, sometimes controversial humor in Plebes, a strip that more than one college newspaper editor has been fired for running.
