The Book of Proverbs is the key book in the Bible that teaches us wisdom; "the single, most important thing in life we could ever achieve". If we not only read the book, but put the advice to work in our lives, we can truly become wise. Frank realized that most people have a difficult time interpretting the Bible and never get the full understanding of what the passages are trying to get across to us. "If we don't fully understand what we are reading, how can we apply the advice to our lives?", was his question. With this in mind, he took three different Bible interpretations of the Book of Proverbs, studied each passage and rewrote them in "plain English", without changing the meanings of the passages, so all could get the full understanding. In this book you will find the simplest format, easiest wording, a daily calendar guide, word index and explanations for hard to understand passages. You will have such ease reading and actually comprehending what you are reading, that you will be amazed the simplicity to interpret. Although the Book of Proverbs was written nearly 3,000 years ago, you will find how relevant these words of wisdom are in our lives today. Prov 1:2--"The purpose of these Proverbs is to teach wisdom, give instruction and perceive words of understanding."
These and similar questions about the book have often been discussed in the past, but no agreed conclusions reached. In this study the question of the purpose behind the composition of the book is raised anew.

Who compiled the varied material in the book of Proverbs, and why? Is there any significance in the order in which it has been arranged? These and similar questions about the book have often been discussed in the past, but no agreed conclusions reached. In this study the question of the purpose behind the composition of the book is raised anew. Whybray first discusses each section of Proverbs separately and then enquires into the significance, if any, of the shape of the book as a whole in its final form. Among the chief features of this study are an analysis of redactional layers in chapters 1-9, the comparison of different concepts of wisdom in the book, the question of a theological development in the course of the redactional process and an investigation of the possibility that the numerous short proverbs in chapters 10-29 may have been consciously arranged in meaningful groups.

This study brings insights from character ethics in addition to the much discussed biblical scholarship on social justice in order to elucidate the concept of righteousness present in the book of Proverbs.
Author: Sun Myung Lyu
Publisher: Mohr Siebeck
This study brings insights from character ethics in addition to the much discussed biblical scholarship on social justice in order to elucidate the concept of righteousness present in the book of Proverbs. The author's choice of Proverbs as a wisdom text in relation to the concept of righteousness reflects the realization that previous scholarship has not dealt with righteousness as a concept in its own right but as a corollary to the issue of social justice. Like character ethics, Proverbs use its depiction of the righteous person as its prominent pedagogic device of moral discourse. In other words, instead of offering abstract statements about morality, Sun Myung Lyu portrays the life of the righteous person as the paradigm of moral life, which is pregnant with numerous realizations into specific actions befitting diverse life situations. What the righteous person embodies is righteousness, the character in toto , which encompasses yet transcends specific virtues and actions. After presenting a comparative study of Proverbs with the Psalms and the ancient Egyptian wisdom texts, the author concludes that despite many similarities and parallels, Proverbs still stands out in its strong emphasis on character formation and internalization of virtues as foundations of morality in general and righteousness in particular.
Each of these books addresses the universal wisdom that the righteous thrive and the wicked suffer in a rational moral order; together they are essential to the ancient canon that is the Hebrew Bible.

First time in paperback: “One of the most ambitious literary projects of this or any age.”—Adam Kirsch, New Republic Here in Robert Alter's bold new translation are some of the most magnificent works in world literature. The astounding poetry in the Book of Job is restored to its powerful ancient meanings and rhythms. The creation account in its Voice from the Whirlwind is beautiful and incendiary. By contrast, a serene fatalism suffuses Ecclesiastes with a quiet beauty, and the pithy maxims of Proverbs impart a worldly wisdom that is satirically shrewd. Each of these books addresses the universal wisdom that the righteous thrive and the wicked suffer in a rational moral order; together they are essential to the ancient canon that is the Hebrew Bible.
