Central to God’s character is the quality of holiness. Yet, even so, most people are hard-pressed to define what God’s holiness precisely is. Many preachers today avoid the topic altogether because people today don’t quite know what to do with words like “awe” or “fear.” R. C. Sproul, in this classic work, puts the holiness of God in its proper and central place in the Christian life. He paints an awe-inspiring vision of God that encourages Christian to become holy just as God is holy. Once you encounter the holiness of God, your life will never be the same.

Notes on the Holiness of God

Notes on the Holiness of God

When we define God's holiness as pure love, we shall be using parts ofthe legitimate insights ofthis type. Its drawback is that it too easily makes the affections, and ultimately the will, of God an external measure by which to define ...

"The nature of God's holiness has been widely misunderstood by contemporary theologians. In this extended essay David Willis not only redefines this divine attribute but also gives it the prominence in Christian thought that it deserves." "According to Willis, confusion about God's holiness is due to the mistake of treating transcendence and immanence as opposites and subsuming holiness almost exclusively under God's transcendence. To correct this view, Willis begins where all true Christian theology should - with the cross and resurrection, where the transcending One is freely immanent to fulfill God's covenanting purposes. God, says Willis, is not so much "the wholly other" as "the Holy Other" who confronts us as purifying love." "Willis looks in detail at several facets of holiness - love, simplicity, communion, beauty. He shows that when we recognize beauty to be an essential aspect of holiness, we can better reconsider frequently given definitions of the glory and the sovereignty of God and can better understand something of the awe-filled love that this beauty inspires. Finally, Willis explores how the holiness of God provides the basis for the life of Christian faith and hope in today's world."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Chosen by God With nearly 200,000 copies sold in its 25 years, Chosen by God by Dr. R. C. Sproul is a contemporary classic on predestination, a doctrine that isn’t just for Calvinists, says Sproul. It is a doctrine for all biblical Christians. In this updated and expanded edition of Chosen by God, Sproul shows that the doctrine of predestination doesn’t create a whimsical or spiteful picture of God, but paints a portrait of a loving God who provides redemption for radically corrupt humans. We choose God because he has opened our eyes to see his beauty; we love him because he first loved us. There is mystery in God’s ways, but not contradiction.

Religious Affections

Therefore holiness comprehends all the true moral excellency of intelligent beings: there is no other true virtue, but real holiness. Holiness comprehends all the true virtue of a good man, his love to God, his gracious love to men, ...

This volume contains Edwards' most mature and persistent attempt to judge the validity of the religious development in eighteenth-century America known as the Great Awakening. In developing criteria for such judgment he attacked at the same time one of the fundamental questions facing all religion: how to distinguish genuine from spurious piety? The Awakening created much bitter controversy; on the one side stood the emotionalists and enthusiasts, and on the other the rationalists, for whom religion was essentially a matter of morality or good conduct and the acceptance of properly formulated doctrine. Edwards, with great analytical skill and enormous biblical learning, showed that both sides were in the wrong. He attacked both a ?lifeless morality” as too pale as to be the essence of religion, and he rejected the excesses of a purely emotional religion more concerned for sensational effects than for the inner transformation of the self, which was, for him, the center of genuine Christianity.

Chosen to Be God s Prophet

Chosen to Be God s Prophet

God called Samuel to be his prophet during a time of crisis in Israel's history, a time when His chosen people had turned away from Him and were defiantly going their own way. Using the obvious parallels in today's world, noted scholar and teacher Henry Blackaby shows readers how God works in and through those he choses. God spoke to Samuel again and again, shaping him through trials and tragedies Dr. Blackaby calls "defining moments." By studying Samuel's life, readers learn to recognize their own defining moments, and see how moments often defined in crises are simply the voice of God, calling us to His purpose.

The Wisdom of Andrew Murray

Collected here in this omnibus edition are three of Andrew Murray's books. Included are Absolute Surrender, The Master's Indwelling, and The Prayer Life. I desire by God's grace to give to you this message-that your God in heaven answers the prayers which you have offered for blessing on yourselves and for blessing on those around you by this one demand: Are you willing to surrender yourselves absolutely into His hands? Every one of us is a temple of God, in which God will dwell and work mightily on one condition-absolute surrender to Him. God claims it, God is worthy of it, and without it God cannot work His blessed work in us. We often hear about the compromise life and the question comes up What lies at the root of it? What is the reason that so many Christians are wasting their lives in the terrible bondage of the world instead of living in the manifestation and the privilege and the glory of the child of God? And another question perhaps comes to us: What can be the reason that when we see a thing is wrong and strive against it we cannot conquer it? What can be the reason that we have a hundred times prayed and vowed, yet here we are still living a mingled, divided, half-hearted life? To those two questions there is one answer: it is self that is the root of the whole trouble.

"This book is not an academic study of what the church has taught, or what scholars have said, but rather a challenging study of what the Bible itself says about God. In The Living God, author R.T. France encourages us to come to grips with the broad sweep of biblical data, showing us that the God of the Bible is neither passive nor far removed from our everyday lives, but rather a dynamic and living reality to be engaged."--Back cover
