If you only have 30 seconds, there is time - using this book - to make sense of the science behind the seeming vagaries of the weather, the controversies, predictions and forecasts for climate change that shape our day-to-day experiences of the great outdoors. Ever since Aristotle first tried to explain the forces that seem to fall from the heavens, meteorology has opened up the study of weather, and caused disputes over the reasons why seasons change, where precipitation falls, why winds blow and when the sun shines. From halcyon days to hurricanes, supercells to silver linings, global warming to giant hailstones, here is the ultimate guide to a near-universal preoccupation: what's the weather like?

In the course of their increasing sociocultural importance, the academic interest in computer games has been growing considerably in the last years. This profound anthology comprehensibly introduces latest approaches in the central fields of game studies and provides an extensive survey of the contemporary game culture. Internationally renowned media and literature scholars, social scientists, game designers, and artists explore the cultural potential of computer games and present new concepts of researching sociocultural, industrial, and aesthetic aspects of digital entertainment.

This book is concerned with recent experimental and theoretical work dealing with phenomena created by the transient dipoles and polarizabilities produced by intermolecular interactions. The for mer produce absorption from the microwave to the optical regions of the spectrum and the latter produce Rayleigh and Raman scattering; such absorption and scattering would be absent without collisions. Static properties, such as dielectric constant, refractive index, and Kerr effect, also exhibit the effects of induced dipoles and polarizabilities. The first observation of an infrared absorption spectrum pro duced by the collisions of molecules which ordinarily do not have an allowed dipole transition was reported in 1949 (Crawford, Welsh, and Locke). The first observation of depolarized Rayleigh spectra due to collisions in atomic gases appeared in 1968 (McTague and Birnbaum). However, it was not until 1977 that the first conference dealing with collision-induced phenomena was organized by J. D. Poll at the University of Guelph. This conference was mainly concerned with studies of collision-induced absorption in gases. Light scat tering received more attention at the second meeting of the colli sion-induced community in 1978, at the E. Fermi Summer School on "Intermolecular Spectroscopy and Dynamical Properties of Dense Sys tems," organized by J. Van Kranendonk. However, the emphasis was still on collision-induced absorption in compressed gases, although some work on liquids, solid H , and related subjects such as ro 2 tational relaxation was included. The third induced phenomena con ference, organized by F.

“The Slumdog Phenomenon” addresses multiple issues related to “Slumdog Millionaire” and, in the process, provides new ways of looking at this controversial film. Each of the book's four sections considers a particular aspect of the film: its relation to the nation, to the slum, to Bollywood and its reception. The volume provides a critical overview of the key issues and debates stemming from the film, and allows readers to reexamine them in light of the anthology's multiple perspectives.
