The Therapeutic Harp Workbook is a practical guide exploring the wonderful world and nuances of therapeutic harp. This relatively new profession uses the harp to support a person's physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing in healthcare facilities and in the community. The harp has been an instrument of transformation and healing since ancient times and a recent resurgence in its use in health care has seen the profession of therapeutic harp grow. Drawing on 12 years of clinical practice, Alison provides guidance and suggestions for all musicians wanting an insight into the deeper aspects of playing in a therapeutic style within health care and community environments. By using case studies, practical strategies, journaling and art activities, this workbook will assist and further develop your understanding of therapeutic harp. Topics include: what is therapeutic harp, finding a training program, self-care, professional practices, musical development, artistry, and exploring the spiritual aspects of playing music at the bedside of the ill. Also included are inspirational stories from other therapeutic harp practitioners. The Therapeutic Harp Workbook encourages you to dream big as you create and develop a new way of offering your music. About the Author: Alison Ware works in Canberra, Australia, as a Certified Therapeutic Harpist, Registered Counsellor and Creative Arts Therapist. Alison is a graduate of: the International Healing Musician's Program, the International Harp Therapy Program, and the Clinical Musician Certification Program. Alison also has qualifications in nursing, art therapy, allied health, spiritual care, mindfulness-based stillness meditation and is an ordained interfaith minister. Death the Door, Music a Key is an invitation to join a journey that is not always easy, but might just alter the way you think about how you live your life. The journey begins in the fragile moments just before life ends, as we sit beside the deathbed and seek to understand this sacred process through the eyes of a harpist. This book of stories tells of ordinary people in the midst of extraordinary moments: people experiencing grief, loss and the anticipation of death. For the most part, however, it is the story of the author, who followed a calling to sit with the dying and share her music. It paints a picture of the work that I do as a harpist who plays intuitive music at the bedside, the restorative qualities of the harp, and the gift that it brings many. It is my hope that through telling these stories, not only will the lives of those who I have played for be honoured, but also their death. It is my hope that their story will serve as a reminder to others that this experience does not have to be frightening, though it requires acceptance, and acceptance requires courage. This acceptance of death can be rarely found, and when it is, it is unmistakable, for their peace seems to permeate everything and everyone around them.

Music therapists are trained to use their first study instrument in clinical practice, yet existing literature focuses almost exclusively on the use of piano, basic percussion and voice. This illuminating book brings together international music therapists who use a diverse range of musical instruments in their clinical work: the clarinet, the piano accordion, the flute, the cello, the trumpet and flugelhorn, the bassoon, the violin, the viola, the harp, the guitar, lower brass instruments (the trombone and the euphonium), the oboe, the saxophone and bass instruments (double bass and bass guitar). Each therapist reflects on their relationship with their instrument and the ways in which they use it in therapeutic settings, discussing its advantages and disadvantages in a variety of clinical populations: children and adolescents, adults with learning disabilities, adults with mental health problems and older people. This will be essential reading for any music therapist or student music therapist who uses or is interested in using a musical instrument in their work, and will be of interest to other caring and healthcare professionals, teachers, musicians and carers wanting to learn more about instrumental music therapy.
