This book traces the journey of two individuals who have spent their lives on both sides of the teacher/professor's desk. Between them, they went from attending kindergarten to being a college president, and in that journey, they held positions ranging from classroom teacher in the New York City public schools, every rank of the professorial ladder, to almost every administrative position available in a university. In their book, Marcus and Vairo are totally candid in relating their experiences in their various roles. They are highly opinionated, but these opinions are based on the realities they encountered with students and colleagues at all levels of education. This book utilizes vignettes as well as commentaries to tell a story of two educators who have worked at every part of the United States. There is little that has happened in education since the 1940's down to the present day that is not touched on in this book. Marcus and Vairo are "insiders" with no ax to grind. They tell the truth as they see it!

Life should be less complicated now. He has made the sacrifice of life on the edge for nine-to-five and the paperwork routine surrounding his mahogany foxhole - until the rumours of a possible firearms raid on the Victoria Police Department. Ableism is embedded in Canadian criminal justice institutions, policies, and practices, making incarceration and institutionalization dangerous – even deadly – for disabled people. Disability Injustice examines disability in contexts that include policing and surveillance, sentencing and the courts, prisons and alternatives to confinement. The contributors confront challenging topics such as the pathologizing of difference as deviance; eugenics and crime control; criminalization based on biased physical and mental health approaches; and the role of disability justice activism in contesting discrimination. This provocative collection highlights how, with deeper understanding of disability, we can challenge the practices of crime control and the processes of criminalization.

Have you ever thrown caution to the wind and done something out of the ordinary—something to break up the monotonous and the mundane? And if so, was this choice you made so outlandish and irresponsible, were there times you felt your life was perilously hanging in the balance? Well, that’s exactly what twenty-three year old, scatterbrain extraordinaire, Cassy Carter did. In fact, that’s how this whole nightmare of an adventure begins: Hitchhiking on a dare! On a roadside nearing the hour of dusk, a young woman thumbing it for kicks and giggles, and maybe a bit more. For what happens next in these lush foothills and mountains dusted with snow, is the making of things unexpected. Things involving hellish demons, a killer copter, and a bloodthirsty drug baron. And if that doesn’t sound like enough of a risk, how about falling for the man responsible for all this craziness? Meet Jack Reynolds, an unorthodox character if there ever was one, a manly man who lives in a treehouse and eats whatever can be snared with a fishing rod or a crossbow. For Cassy soon becomes one of the snared, often wondering if she was pegged to be more than a lover—like the possible fixings for a scrumptious meal. Following a mad chase along the primitive logging trails, an accident finds the two of them at the mercy of drug-running thugs in dire want of a payday. And when it becomes apparent that Jack cannot fulfil this request, the young heroine turns into the only prize left in this deadly game of cat and mouse. For as with most people, love can play tricks and cloud judgements. With Cassy, this lingering struggle is no different. At times these feelings gave her unbound strength; when in other moments, they seemed to render her with obvious paralysis. But the question remains...would this emotion prove to be her downfall, or the precise ingredient required to make it out alive?
