Fully revised and expanded, this new editionupdates the subject for pre-clinical and clinical veterinarystudents in a comprehensive manner. Individual sections deal withbacteriology, mycology and virology. Written by an academic teamwith many years of teaching experience, the book provides concisedescriptions of groups of microorganisms and the diseases whichthey cause. Microbial pathogens are discussed in separate chapterswhich provide information on the more important features of eachmicroorganism and its role in the pathogenesis of diseases ofanimals. The international and public health significance of thesepathogens are reviewed comprehensively. The final section isconcerned with the host and is organized according to the bodysystem affected. Tables, boxes and flow diagrams provide information in an easilyassimilated format. This edition contains new chapters on moleculardiagnostics and on infectious conditions of the skin, cardiovascular system, urinary tract and musculoskeletal system. Many new colour diagrams are incorporated into this edition andeach chapter has been updated. The most recent revision of this comprehensive text covers the bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogenic agents that are significant causes of animal disease. The focus includes pathogenic mechanisms and processes in infectious diseases; methods of diagnosis; and principles of resistance, prevention, and therapy. Veterinary Microbiology, Second Edition is now organized in four sections according to the most appropriate methods of instruction. Section 1 deals with the general characteristics of the host– parasite relationship, laboratory diagnosis of conditions involving an infectious etiology, antimicrobial treatment, and prevention of infectious disease. Sections 2 (bacteria and fungi) and 3 (viruses) present the infectious agents that affect the veterinary species. The chapters dealing with the bacterial agents are grouped mainly by morphology, and their gram-staining characteristics. The fungal agents are grouped mainly by morphologic characteristics (yeast, mold). The viruses are grouped along taxonomic grounds. Section 4, an enhancement new to this edition, deals with the infectious agents in the context of the host. This section is organized by organ system. Each organ system is discussed first as a microbial habitat, followed by discussion of those infectious agents that mainly affect that particular system. In addition to serving as a resource for veterinary students, Veterinary Microbiology, Second Edition also serves as a convenient reference for veterinarians and veterinary scientists whose main line of activity and expertise is outside the areas of microbiology.

Diagnose, treat, and manage equine skin disorders with the most comprehensive reference available! With 900 full-color photos, Equine Dermatology covers skin diseases ranging from those that merely annoy the horse to others that interfere with the horse's ability to function in riding, working, or show. Thorough coverage includes essential basics and practical diagnostic methods, therapies, and specific abnormalities and defects. The book describes the structure and function of the skin, and discusses disorders including bacterial, fungal, parasitic, viral, protozoal, allergic, immune-mediated, endocrine, metabolic, and nutritional diseases. It also covers congenital and hereditary defects, pigmentation abnormalities, keratinization defects, environmental skin diseases, and skin tumors. Written by renowned equine dermatologists Danny Scott and Bill Miller, this all-inclusive resource covers the latest dermatologic topics and the newest therapies. Current, comprehensive coverage includes every known equine dermatosis. An emphasis on differential diagnosis includes key differentials and breed predilections for each disease, especially helpful when you have only a specimen and an incomplete history to work with. A consistent format makes it easy to locate information on each skin disorder, including a clinical description, its cause and pathogenesis, clinical features, clinical management, diagnosis, treatment, and any zoonotic aspects. Expert authors Danny W. Scott, DVM, and William H. Miller, Jr., VMD, offer years of knowledge, experience, and their vast image collections. Diagnostic tables in each chapter provide a quick reference for identifying lesions and disorders. An extensive list of references at the end of each chapter includes recommendations for further reading. New coverage of dermatologic conditions includes the latest topics and emerging disorders such as chronic progressive lymphedema, herpesvirus-2-associated dermatitis, salmonella-associated dermatoses, and nodular auricular chondropathy. Updated Diagnostic Methods chapter covers multiple methods of developing a differential diagnosis list based on breed, lesion type, patterns, and location. A focus on common clinical problems highlights the conditions most likely to be seen in practice. Almost 1,000 full-color photos of skin disorders make it easy to distinguish clinical characteristics and variations of normal and abnormal for accurate diagnosis and therapy.

Current Topics in Occupational Epidemiology is an in-depth study of contemporary issues and emerging themes in the field. Divided into seven parts the book discusses 'new' occupational diseases such as pneumonia in welders as well as 'older' diseases including morbidity and mortality among miners. Trends in society have encouraged the application of occupational epidemiological methods to new issues such as the ageing workforce, return to work after illness, and the migration of workers. These issues as well the extension of epidemiology to surveillance systems, systematic reviews, and economic analyses are discussed in topic specific chapters. Written by leading international experts in the field, Current Topics in Occupational Epidemiology provides a comprehensive look at the current areas of interest and will be essential reading for epidemiologists, statisticians, exposure assessment scientists, physicians, and policymakers.
