The New York Times bestselling author of The Westies and Paddy Whacked offers a front-row seat at the trial of Whitey Bulger, and an intimate view of the world of organized crime—and law enforcement—that made him the defining Irish American gangster. For sixteen years, Whitey Bulger eluded the long reach of the law. For decades one of the most dangerous men in America, Bulger—the brother of influential Massachusetts senator Billy Bulger—was often romanticized as a Robin Hood-like thief and protector. While he was functioning as the de facto mob boss of New England, Bulger was also serving as a Top Echelon informant for the FBI, covertly feeding local prosecutors information about other mob figures—while using their cover to cleverly eliminate his rivals, reinforce his own power, and protect himself from prosecution. Then, in 2011, he was arrested in southern California and returned to Boston, where he was tried and convicted of racketeering and murder. Our greatest chronicler of the Irish mob in America, T. J. English covered the trial at close range—by day in the courtroom, but also, on nights and weekends, interviewing Bulger’s associates as well as lawyers, former federal agents, and even members of the jury in the backyards and barrooms of Whitey’s world. In Where the Bodies Were Buried, he offers a startlingly revisionist account of Bulger’s story—and of the decades-long culture of collusion between the Feds and the Irish and Italian mob factions that have ruled New England since the 1970s, when a fateful deal left the FBI fatally compromised. English offers an authoritative look at Bulger’s own understanding of his relationship with the FBI and his alleged immunity deal, and illuminates how gangsterism, politics, and law enforcement have continued to be intertwined in Boston. As complex, harrowing, and human as a Scorsese film, Where the Bodies Were Buried is the last word on a reign of terror that many feared would never end.

It's the missing link - the story that ties the Underbelly cast of characters to a series of unsolved crimes that have taunted police and haunted victims' families for decades. That includes at least three brazen heists totalling $6million - and four murders as dark and as daring as any in the history of Australian organised crime.

The King's Body investigates the role of royal bodies, funerals, and graves in English succession debates from the death of Alfred the Great in 899 through the Norman Conquest in 1066. Using contemporary texts and archaeological evidence, Nicole Marafioti reconstructs the political activity that accompanied kings' burials, to demonstrate that royal bodies were potent political objects which could be used to provide legitimacy to the next generation. In most cases, new rulers celebrated their predecessor's memory and honored his corpse to emphasize continuity and strengthen their claims to the throne. Those who rose by conquest or regicide, in contrast, often desecrated the bodies of deposed royalty or relegated them to anonymous graves in attempts to brand their predecessors as tyrants unworthy of ruling a Christian nation. By delegitimizing the previous ruler, they justified their own accession. At a time when hereditary succession was not guaranteed and few accessions went unchallenged, the king's body was a commodity that royal candidates fought to control.

Warfare has always been manpower intensive. Apart from the large number of combatant troops, many more personnel are required to keep the military force operating. These personnel are involved in the manufacture of materials, movement of supplies such as ammunition and food, building and maintenance of camps, mending and cleaning equipment, manning headquarters and training establishments, building railways, recovery of the dead and wounded , and many other tasks. From 1917 British soldiers who were unfit or too old for front line service were to serve unarmed and within the range of German guns for weeks or even months at a time undertaking these tasks. The vital, yet largely unreported role played by these men was crucial to achieving victory in 1918. Labour units were seen as a poor relative of the Army, made up of the old, unfit and foreigners. The majority of the men were non-combatant. At the time, and since, they have not been given the recognition they deserved. Their work may not have been glamorous but can be summed up in four words - No Labour, No battle. For this book John Starling and Ivor Lee have brought together extensive research from both primary and secondary sources. They trace how military labour developed from an ad hoc loose arrangement in 1914 to a Corps in November 1918 some 400,000 strong, supported by dominion and foreign labour of more than a million men. Conscientious objectors were also used to supplement labour numbers. Detailing the work of the Corps as far afield as Russia, East Africa and Mesopotamia, the many types of work they were required to do, and the role of prisoners of war, No Labour, No Battle is a unique record of the part played by Labour in the First World War and in its immediate aftermath. Following the war, the grim and solemn work of clearing battlefields and constructing cemeteries fell of course to the newly formed Labour Corps. This book therefore continues the story up until disbandment of the Corps.

Deep in the heart of North Yorkshire, at a place called Walkington Wold, there lies a rather unusual burial ground, an Anglo-Saxon execution cemetery. Twelve skeletons were unearthed by archaeologists, ten without skulls, later examination of the skeletons revealed that their owners were all subjected to judicial execution by decapitation, one of which required several blows.Similar fates have befallen other wretched souls, the undignified burial of suicides - in the Middle Ages, the most profound of sins - and the desecration of their bodies, go largely unrecorded. Whilst plague pits, vast cemeteries where victims of the Black Death were tossed into the ground, their bodies festering one on top of another, are only today betraying their secrets.Although unpalatable to some, these burial grounds are an important part of our social heritage. They have been fashioned as much by the people who founded and used them, as by the buildings, gravestones and other features which they contain. They are records of social change; the symbols engraved upon individual memorials convey a sense of inherent belief systems, as they were constructed, adapted or abandoned depending on people's needs.Symbols of Mortality explores how these attitudes, practices and beliefs about death have undergone continual change. By studying the development of society's funerary spaces, the author will reveal how we continue to reinforce our relationships with the dead, in a constant and on-going effort to maintain a bond with them.

The Battle of Gettysburg was responsible for the deaths of between 4,500 and 5,000 Confederate soldiers. In rank from general through private, most of these men were struck down in the prime of their life at the average age of only twenty-four! This book details the interesting but somber story of a very tragic portion of that battle, and addresses the following topics: * The initial first-hand descriptions of the festering battlefield, including sights of the rapidly decomposing corpses. * A summary of the early incomplete burials of thousands of battlefield and field hospital casualties. * Later visitors' accounts of rain-washed, open graves and the scattered bones of the Confederate dead. * Specific recollections of how the bodies were buried and how graves were marked. * A list of 150 Confederates and their actual burial places in the Gettysburg area. * A section of over 120 burial locations on farms or elsewhere and 300 sub-categories which pinpoint the graves within these main burial areas. * Six maps which guide the visitors to the actual grave sites, and over 80 photographs of burial locations and Southerners killed in the battle. * The story of the removal of over 3,000 Confederate remains to final interment in the South in 1871 to 1873. * Biographies of 50 Southern soldiers in rank from private to general officer, which documents their last moments on earth. * Post-war discoveries of forgotten graves in the Gettysburg area from 1875 to 1945.
