Written in 1836, Woyzeck is often considered to be the first truly "modern" play. The story of a soldier driven mad by inhuman military discipline and acute social deprivation is told in splintered dialogue and jagged episodes which are as shocking and telling today as they were when first performed, almost a century after the author's death, in Munich 1913. This volume contains an introduction and notes by Michael Patterson. The introduction provides biographical background on Buchner, as well detail on the discovery of Woyzeck after so many years of it lying dormant as an apparently 'unreadable' manuscript. It also provides a brief analysis of the play, a study of the historical source that influenced Buchner, the tragic character of Woyzeck and his motivations, the social dimensions of the play, and notes on specific productions, and Mackendrick's translation. This is the version of the text prescribed by Edexcel for Unit 4 (Theatre Text in Context) of the 2008 GCE Drama and Theatre Studies Specification.

Replay: Classic Modern Drama Reimagined spans over a century of great theatre to explore how iconic plays have been adapted and versioned by later writers to reflect or dissect the contemporary zeitgeist. Starting with A Doll's House, Ibsen's much-reprised masterpiece of marital relations from 1879, Toby Zinman explores what made the play so controversial and shocking in its day before tracing how later reimaginings have reworked Ibsen's original. The spine of plays then includes such landmark works as Strindberg's Miss Julie, Oscar Wilde's comic The Importance of Being Earnest, Chekhov's Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya, Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, the Rattigan centenary revivals, Thornton Wilder's Our Town, ultimately arriving at Beckett's Waiting for Godot. Taking each modern play as the starting point, Zinman explores the diverse renderings and reworkings by subsequent playwrights and artists –including prominent directors and their controversial productions as well as acknowledging reworkings in film, opera and ballet.Through the course of this groundbreaking study we discover not only how theatrical styles have changed but how society's attitude towards politics, religion, money, gender, sexuality and race have radically altered over the course of the century. In turn Replay reveals how theatre can serve as both a reflection of our times and a provocation to them.

Buchner's special quality, and that which makes him seem more contemporary than almost anything written today, is his total, uncompromising honesty of emotion and intellect. The German writer Georg Buchner, who died in 1837 aged 23, left only three works for the theatre. Danton's Death, his great fresco of the French Revolution, was written in five weeks when Buchner was under threat of arrest for his own revolutionary activities. His sad comedy, Leonce and Lena, was composed in haste for a publisher's competition for which it was entered too late. The extraordinary proletarian tragedy Woyzeck was left unfinished at Buchner's death. Virtually unknown until the end of the nineteenth century, the plays have found an important place in the modern international repertory.

His girlfriend, Marie, by whom he’s fathered a child; Marie’s overpowering desire for the alluring Drum- Major; and the murderous outcome of this oppressive admixture of circumstances is without a doubt one of the bleakest works of world literature. It is also considered by many to mark the beginning of modern drama. In this powerful adaption, Neil LaBute embraces the glittering darkness of Woyzeck's violent, erotic, inhumane world and uncompromisingly makes it his own. From his opening in an operating theatre and then scene by macabre scene, LaBute imbues this classic with his singular intensity and moral vision, as he takes it to its nightmarish conclusion. Included in this volume is Neil LaBute’s provocative new monologue “Kandahar,†? in which a soldier back from Afghanistan calmly explains his devastating actions of the day before. A gripping stand-alone piece, this short work is also a trenchant modern-day exploration of the potent and enduring themes of Woyzeck.

'Everyone's an abyss. You get dizzy if you look down.' -- Woyzeck Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck was left unfinished at the time of its author’s death in 1837, but the play is now widely recognised as the first ‘modern’ drama in the history of European theatre. Its fragmentary form and critical socio-political content have had a lasting influence on artists, readers and audiences to this day. The abuse, exploitation, and disenfranchisement that Woyzeck’s titular protagonist endures find their mirror in his own murderous outburst. But beyond that, they also echo in the flux and confusion of the various drafts and versions in which the play has been presented since its emergence. In this fresh engagement with a modern classic, Gritzner examines the revolutionary dimensions of Büchner’s political and creative practice, as well as modern approaches to the play in performance.

Simon Stephens is one of Britain's and arguably Europe's pre-eminent playwrights. He has garnered numerous awards for both his original works and his adaptations, with his adaptation of Mark Haddon's novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time winning 7 Olivier Awards including Best Play and enjoying acclaim on Broadway. In the first book to provide a critical account of the full variety of Stephens's work, Jacqueline Bolton gives a detailed analysis of his plays and their production, reviews current discourses around his work and offers a framework for future enquiry. Essays from Basil Chiasson (University of Calgary), James Hudson (University of Lincoln) and Cristina Delgado-Garcia (Manchester Metropolitan University) provide additional international perspectives, while contributions from theatre practitioners Sean Holmes, Marianne Elliot, Sarah Frankcom and Sebastian Nuebling illuminate the work from a director's viewpoint. Since the beginning of his professional career in 1998, Stephens's award-winning plays have been translated into over a dozen languages, been produced on four continents, and feature prominently in the repertoires of theatres across Europe. His collaborations with actors, directors, dramaturgs, designers, novelists, musicians and choreographers have produced a dramaturgically diverse body of plays, musicals, adaptations, texts and monologues. As Bolton demonstrates, this extensive oeuvre has been animated by a search for optimism within chaos and violence. In its coverage of work from 1998's Bluebird to Carmen Disruption in 2015, the Companion contextualizes Stephens's ouevre through his embrace of aesthetics and processes encountered in European theatre and, in particular, the impact this has had upon attitudes towards the function of writing and the role of the audience in live performance. The Companion serves as an engaging study of one of the most restlessly creative and important dramatists of our generation.
